After working hard on multiplication and division before the holidays, we made a start on the next unit, 'measurement'  in the last week before we broke up. Whereas we concentrated on measuring length and height before the break, we will now be moving into the initial weeks of the Summer term by particularly focusing on different forms of measurement relating to mass, capacity and temperature including the various units of measurement and problem solving relating to these too.

In our English lessons this half term, we will begin by recapping the structure and contents of a non-chronological report. We have already produced some fantastic reports about Kenya and now that we have more understanding of these, we will be looking to continue this with some even better reports about our new topic too. Following on from this, we will be looking at how to develop character descriptions and develop our understanding of descriptive language and features such as expanded noun phrases to help us do so.

This half term, we are going to be learning about the different parts of a plant and what the purpose of each of the different parts are. We will be considering what conditions a plant needs in order to grow successfully and we will also look to recognise and name some different examples of plants and flowers, too.

In our wider curriculum lessons, we are going to be continuing to alternate between history and geography,

History: The Great Fire of London

In History, we will be building on the previous knowledge we discovered when we learned about the Great Fire of London in Year 1. We will be looking at this topic in a more detailed and in depth manner, really focussing on embedding some of the key facts of a major event beyond our living memory.

Geography: Coasts

In the geography lessons, we are going to be concentrating on the coastline of the United Kingdom. To help us with this, we will be identifying some of the human and physical features that are found along the coast as well as starting to use the four main compass points to help us read and understand maps to describe the location of some of these features.

Following on from our learning about the Christian Easter story, we will be moving on to think about what makes a good leader. We are going to look at some key figures in different religions such as Judaism and Christianity and discuss what makes them a good leader and how we can use some of their good qualities and some of their key characteristics to help us think about how we can be a good leader ourselves.

Now that the summer months are approaching, we will be starting to think about different sports that are typically played in the warmer weather such as cricket and tennis. We will begin by learning some of the basic skills relating to both of these sports before applying the skills in more game-like and more competitive situations.
