YEAR 2 - Ashford & Aston

Hello Year 2 and welcome back after the autumn break 😊

After some amazing learning last half-term, the Y2 team are so excited to continue working with you as we continue with some of the topics that we started in September. For the remainder of the term, we will be learning all about the following:

Mrs Talbot, Mrs Rose and Mrs Maddison

What We're Learning This Half Term

Mathematics: â€¯Addition and Subtraction / Shape

Following on from the practical learning we started before half term, we will be continuing to look at different methods to help us solve a range of addition and subtraction problems. We will explore how we can use equipment such as Base 10 to recognise when we may need to exchange tens and ones to help us with some of the trickier problems. After our number work, we will move on to learn about different 2D and 3D shapes including the names of them, their properties, patterns and symmetry that may be found in some of the shapes.

English: Formal writing and stories from other cultures.

In our English lessons this half term, we will be learning how formal writing differs to more informal genres and what features we would expect to find in formal invitations. After this, we will be looking at some stories from other cultures and using these to help inspire some of our own writing based on what we have seen.

Science: Animals (including Humans)

This half term, we will be focussing our science learning on how animals change through their lifetimes – thinking about what we  can and cannot do as babies and how this differs as we get older. We will also be looking at our basic needs and what we need in  order to survive before moving on to find out what we can do to stay healthy. When looking at how we can stay healthy, we will  discuss the importance of exercise, a balanced diet and how we can maintain a good level of personal hygiene.

Curriculum Focus: â€¯History – The Gunpowder Plot     Geography- Continents and Oceans

In our wider curriculum lessons, we are going to be continuing to alternate between history and geography,

In history we will still be exploring The Gunpowder Plot and why it is still significant today. We will be learning all about where, when and why it happened and the significance of the 5th November.

In geography we will still be finding out about the different continents and oceans of the world. After discovering where they are on a map, we are going to explore the similarities and differences between the continents and important facts and information about the oceans.

PE: Hockey and Dance

During our hockey sessions, we will be learning some of the basic techniques including how to hold a hockey stick appropriately before learning how to pass and control the ball. Once we have built up our basic skills, we will transfer these into game situations to add a competitive element. In dance, we will be learning some basic moves and using these to help put together and learn some different routines.

RE/PSHE: How do I say thankful for the beautiful Earth?

In our RE lessons, we will be delving into different Christian and Muslim teachings to find out how we can use stories from these religions to help us understand more about the world around us. In PSHE, we are moving on to find out about our feelings and how these link to the relationships we have with different people in our lives.

Homework:

There is a selection of project ideas which are still available for this term on the homework menu and our newsletter for Autumn.
