science workshops
In Year 1 and 5, the children had an exciting and educational experience during their Science Workshop, led by George the Scientist. The focus of the workshop was on how things change and adapt in the world around us. Throughout the session, George made science come alive in a fun and engaging way, helping the children discover important concepts about cleanliness, materials, fire, weather, and even bubbles!
The first session began with a very important lesson on germs and how to keep our hands clean. George demonstrated how germs can spread using a special solution and UV light. When the children applied the solution to their hands and then looked under the UV light, they could see how germs spread easily if we don't wash our hands properly. The children loved having a go at testing how washing their hands could remove the germs. They were very enthusiastic about learning the best ways to keep their hands clean and prevent germs from spreading!
Next, George explored how different materials can affect the way a bubble behaves. They had the chance to try it out themselves, bouncing a bubble on their hands. The real fun began when they tried it again while wearing cotton gloves. The children were thrilled to see how the bubbles reacted differently with the gloves on, which sparked their curiosity about materials and their properties. This part of the session ended with an exciting competition between the two Year 1 classes. The children had to see who could make bounce the most successful for the longest time. The friendly competition added a fun, team-oriented element to the day, and everyone was cheering each other on.
The excitement continued with a thrilling experiment where the children made a fire tornado. George explained how fire needs oxygen to thrive, and by creating a controlled environment with spinning air, they were able to see how fire can form a spiral as it takes in oxygen. The children were amazed by the sight of the fire twisting in the air, learning firsthand how oxygen plays an important role in how fire behaves. It was an unforgettable moment that tied into the larger lesson about the changes that happen when things interact with the right conditions.
Another cool experiment involved the water cycle. George showed the children how rain can turn into a cloud when pressure is applied. Using a cylinder, the children pumped air into the container and observed how the water changed and transformed into a cloud right before their eyes. It was so cool to watch the transformation, and the children loved learning about how pressure can affect weather patterns and the water cycle.
The children left the workshop with big smiles, having learned important lessons about hygiene, materials, fire, weather, and the science behind bubbles. The session with George the Scientist was a huge success, full of hands-on learning and laughter. It was a fantastic way to inspire the children to think about science in their everyday lives, and they can't wait for the next opportunity to experiment and discover more!
